Body of Knowledge

Professional chaplaincy needs to be underpinned by knowledge and understanding that integrates academic learning with clinical practice.

UKBHC recognises that the theory and knowledge of chaplaincy will draw upon a number of disciplines and subjects and it is therefore developing an outline body of knowledge that it considers underpins good chaplaincy practice including: Practical Theology, Pastoral Care, Religious Studies, Psychology, Ethics, Sociology and Philosophy.

In addition chaplains need associated skills to apply their knowledge and understanding including self-reflection; critical reasoning; a range of communication skills and other interpersonal skills; information gathering; education and training; information technology and management.
